New wireless LAN standards are always being developed to create, improve, and secure applications. IEEE's most well-known wireless LAN protocols are 802.11n for applications up to 600 Mbit/s and 802.11ac for applications up to 6.7 Gbps. This new standard also better utilizes the streams in use (multi-user MIMO). 


 

Wi-Fi HaLow 

Defined as Low-power and long-range Wi-Fi HaLow. This standard will use a license-free band below 1 GHz instead of the typical 2.4 and 5 GHz. The lower frequency takes loss to a minimal, capable of doubling the range extension (increased to 1km with a data rate of at least 100kbps). The new standard will also easily penetrate walls and ceilings. You will also find familiar features like the multi-user MIMO and single-user beamforming to be present in this new generation. 
 

Improved Power Consumption

The new standard's low power consumption and modest channel bandwidth make it ideal for battery-powered devices. Thus, 802.11ah is used for IoT, Smart homes, linked cars, digital healthcare, and other applications.
